Today we reflect, honor, and celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. On #MLKDay we will strive to honor Dr. King with one of his greatest hopes for our country by providing service in our community. As Dr. King so eloquently stated, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”.
Through acts big and small, you can make a powerful impact on people's lives in your community. Some ideas that motivate us to pay it forward and send good vibes out into the world: buy a coffee for the person behind you in the drive-through, send food to your local firehouse or police department, stop and thank the essential employees who have sacrificed so much over these last two years, write a note of appreciation to educators, and school staff.
On a larger scale, there are many ways to get involved in serving the community and helping our neighbors in need. These are a few organizations in our local backyard that are near and dear to our hearts:
The food insecurity crisis remains overwhelming in our area. Collections of food for the local food banks are always needed: https://www.actiaf.org/feed-anne-arundel or https://aafoodbank.org/volunteer or https://annapolislighthouse.org/.
Volunteer to help keep our beautiful green spaces and waterways clean: https://www.aacounty.org/departments/recreation-parks/jobs/volunteer/.
Change a life through literacy by volunteering with the Anne Arundel County Literacy Council - https://icanread.org/.
Give love and support to stray and rescue animals in need: https://www.barcs.org or https://www.faacac.org/.
Making time to volunteer for #mlkdayofservice2022 is a great way to engage with our community while honoring the legacy of Dr. King. Whether planning to clean up a public space, mentor a young person, or assist those who are food insecure, what you do makes a world of difference.
We endeavor to step up not just today but every day to make our communities more equitable and honor Dr. King’s dream of love and peace for all through our actions.

"Everybody can be great … because anybody can serve...You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love." - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
